Marble Cake at the Churchill Studio: A Quest Outing into the Heart of Identity

On Saturday 24th May, a group of us from Quest Soul Theatre took a special outing to the Churchill Theatre Studio to see Marble Cake—a powerful, original piece of theatre by Chequered Theatre. The recommendation came from Dareen at The Bromley Buzz, and it turned out to be one of the most emotionally resonant hours we’ve experienced together in a long time.

Marble Cake is not your average play. Created and performed by the two lead actors, Kumi and Keisha, this deeply personal piece explores the intricacies and contradictions of being mixed race in modern Britain. Set in the round, the performance drew us into a space that was both intimate and explosive, where every gesture and glance carried weight.

The show weaves the story of two siblings navigating their relationship—not only with each other, but with society. Kumi and Keisha take us through gender roles, cultural assumptions, identity politics, and family bonds using music, costume, and shifting theatrical styles that underscore complex themes without ever being heavy-handed. Their creative choices were bold, but always accessible—inviting the audience to reflect, connect, and feel.

There was a collective intake of breath during one standout moment: Kumi, overwhelmed by frustration, dances to Frank Sinatra—a scene that manages to be both tender and harrowing. The contrast between the classic crooner’s smooth tones and Kumi’s raw, embodied anger was unforgettable. It served as a stark reminder of how society often fails to create space for men—especially Black men—to express emotional vulnerability.

Keisha, meanwhile, brought balance and grace, grounding the narrative with empathy and insight. Together, the performers created a dynamic that was magnetic, compassionate, and true.

Chequered Theatre has been developing this piece over the last three years, and it shows. Marble Cake is rich with nuance and integrity—and now it’s heading to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. We couldn’t be more excited for what’s ahead for this talented duo, and we wish them every success.
